Meet the cat community in Austin, TX
Let’s talk about the great city of Austin, Texas. One of the largest and “weirdest” cities in Texas, home to the University of Texas and a large music scene, Austin is continuously one of the best places to live and visit in Texas. With a burgeoning population, there is never a shortage of like-minded kitty lovers to hang out in Austin! Just like everything in Texas, the love for cats in Austin is huge! Let’s start out with all the fun things to do that are purrfect for both cat and owner. Since Austin is such a large festival city, you can be confident that every once a while, a kitty centric event will roll through town. For example, in November 2020 this year, Pop Cats will be making a couple day stop in Austin. Pop Cats is a cat-focused festival, where cat related pop and art are celebrated. There are also adoptions happening live at the event. The organization that puts on this festival donates a portion of their proceeds to cat organizations that participate in the event, so you can feel good knowing the price of the ticket is well worth it because it helps the local cat community. Keep up to date on events and festivals happening in Austin, Pop Cats isn’t the only cat festival that could set up shop in this quirky city. If festivals aren’t your thing, but you love to eat and drink, rest assured, dogs aren’t the only pet allowed at restaurants in Austin. Austin prides itself on being a very pet-friendly city, with outdoor spaces and patios where pets are welcome. There are a handful of restaurants in the Austin area who have made it clear that their patio space is open to ALL pets, and not just dogs, such as 360 Uno and Doc’s Backyard Grill. Is your cat good on a leash? Do you like to give your cat fresh air in a stroller? These options could be great for multitasking between fresh air and getting a bite to eat. Do a bit of research before heading out, there are some places that specify whether dogs are welcome, or all furry friends. Enjoy the view of downtown with a nice picnic or playdate with your cat at Zilker Park. This is an animal-friendly park, one of the largest in Austin, with city views and plenty of wide-open space. Attend a cat-lovers meetup here or plan your own! Be mindful of other pets in the area, as Zilker is very popular for dog-owners as well, but there should be plenty of space to keep your cat comfortable and safe. Zilker is a great gathering spot no matter what the occasion might be. If your little kitty friend is comfortable walking on a leash, or enjoys a stroller ride, consider walking him/her down the boardwalk. It is an all pet’s welcome boardwalk and it has beautiful views of Lady Bird Lake. There are some bikers and other pet-walkers, but the boardwalk stretches over a mile so there is plenty of territory for you and your furry friend to get some exercise and take in the great outdoors. If you want to do all these fun cat-related activities, but don’t have a cat yet, don’t worry! There are plenty of adoption opportunities in Austin as well. Austin’s Pets Alive does a good job with adoptions. You can go see the cats they have available for adoption online or in their facility, have a meet and greet with them, and fill out the paperwork that same day. They have cats available that have been abandoned in the community, of all ages and breeds. In fact, if you’re looking to adopt a kitten, Austin’s Pets Alive has a renowned neo-natal kitten facility. Nicknamed the Bottle Baby Program, it is first of its kind in the nation and it takes in kittens from surrounding shelters and homeless kittens during the kitten breeding season, as other shelters can easily become overrun. This program has directly saved over 20,000 kittens since it was founded in 2009! This facility is run by staff, fosters, and volunteers and these kittens need a lot of time and attention, so if you’re interested in adopting or volunteering, this program would definitely be worth your time. Are you partial to a specific breed? Austin is unique because it has its own specific organization for Siamese (and related) cats. Austin Siamese Rescue is committed to providing care to, and re-homing abused, neglected, or abandoned Siamese cats (and 13 other breeds of the Royal Thai Family) in the Austin area. Siamese cats are friendly and active, and they’re also known to be pretty talkative, so they can make the perfect pet and companion, and they also might enjoy some of the activities listed above. Austin Siamese Rescue occasionally holds events in the area, and they have multiple cats up for adoption at any given time. You can help them out by donating, volunteering to foster these cats, or adopting one yourself! Texas generally has the largest population of cats of any state in the U.S., and that includes community or feral cats as well. Austin is home to thousands of community cats itself. Luckily, Austin has organizations in place that aim to help these community cats, and provide basic care and health services to them, additionally helping with the issue of overpopulation and the euthanizing of these cats. Shadow Cats is one such organization operating within Austin that aims to provide care to community cats around the area. They have a Trap-Neuter-Return program for keeping track of cats they have neutered or spayed in the area. Additionally, Shadow Cats provides long-term care for special needs cats in their own sanctuary, and they provide education material to the community about stray or feral cats. They provide volunteer and sponsor-a-cat opportunities as well! If you’re a cat owner living in Austin, Texas, get out and enjoy the cat-friendly activities in the area!
