Meow! I am Laurel, a Cat sitter in Pasadena, CA

โ€œThe smallest feline is a masterpiece.โ€ Leonardo da Vinci's observation could not have been more correct. I love all animals, but I especially have enjoyed living with and caring for cats my entire life. And it's not just domesticated cats that fascinate me. As a volunteer Docent at the L.A. Zoo for over 10 years, I frequently gave tours focused on big- and small-cat wild species, their adaptations, and conservation. The cats I work with must sense that I adore them because I take time to assess their personalities so that we get acquainted on their terms. I have great respect for cats and consider them highly intelligent beings. As a cat-sitter, everything I do is rooted in building mutual trust through love, compassion, respect, honesty, and lots of patience.

Since 2019, I have been working as a cat-sitter for families in and around Pasadena, CA, and I am happy to provide references. My clientele consists mostly of repeat customers, and this has allowed me to establish a positive relationship with the kitties involved so that they always feel comfortable and secure with me when their families are away.

A former college professor, I received my Ph.D. in Psychology (Animal Behavior, Conditioning, and Learning) and often apply training principles and techniques when I work with kitties to make brushing and other treatments as stress-free and enjoyable as possible. I use positive reinforcement and behavioral enrichment to help kitties learn desired behaviors and prevent boredom. I always do my best to provide my kitty clients with the same kindness and quality care that I would want my own kitties to receive. I can never replace their human family members completely, but I do try to replicate daily routines as closely as possible because most kitties are true creatures of habit. I keep daily records of everything I do for each kitty while they are in my care, and I'm happy to send text or email updates with photos and videos to share activities with families while they are gone.

My sweet kitties, Africa, a black and white tabby, and Tashi, a Ragdoll, passed away in 2019 and 2018 at ages 17 and 16, respectively. Cat-sitting is one way I honor their memories. They taught me so much over the years, such as how to provide an enriching, comfortable, and safe home environment, how to help cats adjust to special diets, how to handle "problem" behaviors, and how to give medications and other treatments such as sub-Q fluids when needed.

When I am not cat-sitting, I am tutoring students from middle school through college in writing, academic English, and Psychology. In my free time, I enjoy reading about animal-related topics, writing short stories and poetry, and cooking new recipes.
