Cat Sitting in Bangor, ME

Hello! I moved back to Maine in 2020 and am happy to be able to provide services here! I was a volunteer at the San Diego Humane Society for 3 years; I worked with cats on the adoption floor and with difficult cats in the behavior center. I have been cat sitting for 20 years and have experience caring for cats on special diets, giving insulin shots, and giving medications in any form. I am certified in cat CPR/First Aid.

I worry about my cats when I travel, so I understand wanting to find someone you can trust to watch your cats. I will provide you with many pictures and updates. I also will bring trash to the curb, bring in packages/mail, water plants, and anything else you need!

I worry about my cats when I travel, so I understand wanting to find someone you can trust to watch your cats. I will provide you with many pictures and updates. I also will bring trash to the curb, bring in packages/mail, water plants, and anything else you need!

I always let the cat(s) decide how they want the visit to go; if they are feeling affectionate and want lots of pets, if they just want to play and get their energy out, or a mixture of both! If they need space I will go slow and earn trust on their terms. For shy cats, I just sit quietly and play calming music in order to slowly build their trust and hopefully they will come out of their shell! But if my presence is only causing them anxiety, I will just complete what I need to for each visit and leave them be.

If my calendar shows days that I'm unavailable but you really need someone to come by, if you live outside of my service zone but find yourself in need of a sitter, or if you need a type of visit I don't normally provide (i.e. overnight visits) please don't hesitate to reach out and I will do my best to make an exception to accommodate you and your kitties! If I truly can't make it work then I will put you in touch with another awesome Meowtel sitter that will be able to help!

Learn More About Jen

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I have been cat sitting since 2004 - it's been 20 years! I started cat sitting just for friends & family, and then while living in San Diego I was looking for a way to make extra income and discovered Meowtel. I started cat sitting with Meowtel in 2016 - shortly after the company was created! I also used to work as a barista at the San Diego Cat Cafe and had ~12 cats to care for as part of my job duties. I had so many absolutely wonderful cats that I watched in San Diego, some of them were regulars and some were just one time, but all of whom I still occasionally think about and miss! I now have a great handful of regular clients in Maine. I still cat sit for friends & family and I've even watched a bearded dragon and a pig!

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

I love getting to know each cat and seeing all of the different personalities! I love when I have finished all my cat sitting duties and can just spend the rest of the visit either cuddling with cats or playing with them - or both! Another unexpected perk that I really appreciate is getting to explore different neighborhoods or areas that my clients live in, places I might not have known about otherwise. I got to visit so many different parts of San Diego for example and since I was still new to the area, I really enjoyed/needed that. Sometimes I would walk around the neighborhood after my visit or I would go to a nearby coffee shop, park, etc. I discovered a lot of cool places that way!

Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?

I would have to say my very first reservation, which also became my first regular client. This was all the way back in 2016 so it was a long time ago, but I still think about Mama and Boobers. They were two incredibly sweet, fluffy cats with the cutest faces. It was one of those neighborhoods I mentioned in my previous answer that was actually pretty near my house but it was still a totally new neighborhood to explore so that added to the excitement I felt over my first official Meowtel reservation. I loved spending my evenings with those two cats in my client's quiet and peaceful home. It really set the stage for how awesome my time with Meowtel has been.

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

I have two incredibly sweet boys - Tripp and Gus! Tripp is a rescue from the San Diego Humane Society; he stole my heart while I was volunteering there. Gus is a rescue from the Old Town Animal Shelter. They are both ~14lbs and absolute love bugs. They love being carried around the house and they love looking out the doors and windows at all the wildlife.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

I would find someone reliable and make sure you have options in case you need a backup. What gives me peace of mind using Meowtel is that if something happened to me, Meowtel would find a replacement with no cost and little stress to the client. I also recommend getting a camera. I have heard from clients that they have had past sitters not show up! I would recommend a Ring camera to make sure your sitter is actually showing up and/or a Wyze Pan camera pointed at their food/water so you can ensure that your cat is getting their basic needs met. It also helps you monitor if your cats are properly eating/drinking! For example as a sitter it can be hard to know whether autofeeders dispensed if the cat devours it all before I arrive - but you could check the camera and tell me if it didn't!

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

I always make sure that I lock the door while I am in the home and that I always lock it behind me. If there is a porch light I usually leave that on if I am visiting after dark or if I know my client is returning late at night. I also ask about what lights they would like left on in the house at all times and make sure I keep those on. I always bring in mail and packages so it doesn't look like no one is home. I also am very observant which helps - one time a cleaning lady had come by in between my visits and I messaged my client saying "... It looks like someone was in your home because everything is slightly cleaner and put away but nothing is amiss". She confirmed she had a cleaner that she forgot to mention!

Are you usually available during holidays?

Yes! I try to stick around for most holidays because those are always my busiest times for cat sitting. There is honestly nothing I love more than filling my holidays with a bunch of cat visits and cuddles! I prefer to keep myself available during holidays so those that need to travel (especially my regular clients) can do so without worrying about who will be caring for their cats.

What is your favorite cat toy?

Easter eggs! My cats go crazy over them and it's so fun to watch.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

I like to verbalize everything I am doing so the cat gets used to my voice and always knows where I am.. I don't want to sneak up on them by accident! I will play calming music from my phone. If the cat is the type to eventually warm up to strangers I will earn their trust with food/treats and sit near them and read out loud. If the cat dislikes strangers no matter what and my presence is only giving them anxiety, I will just do everything that needs to get done (food, water, litter) and leave as soon as possible.

Jen did an exceptional job at taking care of Katie! There was a major snow storm in my absence and Jen still prioritized the care of Katie in an unplowed driveway/road. Many thanks to her going above and beyond!!

Jen is absolutely the best! I've left a couple reviews for her already, but yet again she managed to go above and beyond what she had already done for my little furry monsters! I had thought I had scheduled her to visit my kitties when I was gone for a short weekend trip, but I had not! I messaged her to mention something about getting in the house and she replied back letting me know she didn't think she was scheduled to visit! I panicked as I was already out-of-town. Despite the last minute notice and the fact that she had plans for the weekend, she rearranged things and made it happen. She is just the best. :)

Jen is a miracle worker with our very shy and sometimes spicy cat! Our cat usually runs and hides from strangers, friends, cat sitters. But Jen got in pets and treat giving. Jen provides lots of info and pics while we are away. Highly recommend!

Jen is the best cat sitter. She is almost always available when we need her and she treats our kitties like her own. She is able to get out more social kitties to play and is so wonderful with our more shy kitty. She is the best and they always look forward to her visits.

Jen went above and beyond with my two cats! she ran into a few scenarios that I didn’t expect and didn’t hesitate to take care of it no questions asked. she was very attentive and great at communicating and sending pictures which really helped ease my worries about them being alone while we were away!

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!
