I’ve been a huge fan of kitties since I wore my parents down and adopted my first at the age of three, and the feeling seems to be mutual- I’ve been deemed a “cat whisperer” by multiple clients, and it’s a title I wear with pride.

I’ve been petsitting professionally for a little over three years (in addition to my proper grownup job), and in that time I have given cats insulin injections, asthma medication via adaptive cat inhalers, as well as eyedrops, ointment, and oral medications. I have a calm alpha vibe that cats respond well to, and I let them dictate the terms of our interactions.

I love social kitties, but I also respect the autonomy of cats who need affection on their own terms. This approach has helped me to win over several cats whose parents believed this was an impossible goal.

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

I have three of the sweetest, most social tabbies you could ever hope to meet. My eldest is Oscar Wilde, who loves his foam ninja sword and has a purr that you can hear from two floors away. My middle child is Gizmo, a tabico who hides in the sock drawer and then (with malice aforethought) leaps out at me first thing in the morning to demand cuddles. My youngest is Ichiban, a wild gal who has finally realized that I am NOT made out of tree bark- my lower extremities are quite relieved. All three of them greet me at the door when I get home- it’s ridiculously cute.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

You’re giving a sitter access to your home and putting them in charge of caring for your favorite family members. I treat it like a job interview- ask about their experience, but don’t be afraid to dig deep. What’s the scariest situation they’ve dealt with while petsitting? Without explicit guidance, where would they take your pet during a medical emergency? What sort of medical needs do they have experience with? Give them some hypothetical scenarios and ask how they would respond in the situation. If they show up late for the interview without letting you know ahead of time, are slow to respond to your texts or emails, or otherwise act in an unprofessional manner, it’s okay to keep looking. It’s not unreasonable to expect your catsitter to be a professional and to have strong communication skills.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

I let cats tell me when they’re ready to interact and how they want to do so. If they’re hiding, I will sit on the floor near them and talk to them in a quiet, loving voice and let them know that I’m there to be their friend and take care of them. If they have a social sibling, we’ll play in a space near the timid kitty so they can see how much fun we’re having and join in when they’re ready. I have amazed clients by being permitted to pet the glorious tummies of “semi-feral” cats, cats who hide when anyone comes over, and even cats who hide from most of their family members. I find that by respecting cats’ boundaries and letting them control the interaction, and demonstrating patience and respect for their autonomy, the vast majority of “difficult” cats become very loving.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!
