Cat Sitting in Berkeley, CA

Hello fellow cat lovers! I’m relatively new to this app, but have been caring for cats -my own and others- most of my life. That experience has left me appreciative of their finer qualities, quirks and goofiness. I have a pretty self-sufficient rescue kitty of my own, and now that my kids are growing independent, am enjoying caring for many of the cats in my Berkeley neighborhood and nearby.

I take my initial cues about cat temperament, needs and preferences from you, and follow through respectfully based on your kittys’ behavior with me. I’m mindful that it can take time and patience to build trust. If your cat asks for pets or cuddles, they’ll get those in spades. If they enjoy being brushed, I’m happy to accommodate. If they’re chatty we’ll have a friendly conversation. If they seem interested in play we’ll have some fun together with their favorite toys. And if they just want to be left in their own space, I’ll respect that.
Whatever their companionship preferences, I will of course prioritize basic needs of safety, food/water, and a clean litter box...

I think three qualities that set me apart from other cat sitters are longevity, reliability, and enthusiasm.

I’ve had decades of experience caring for kitties. Furthermore, I’ve lived in the same neighborhood for twenty years and hope to stick around for another twenty; I consider Berkeley my long-term community and am fully invested in it. As a cat parent, I know the frustration of having to ‘break in’ a new cat-sitter a little too often because the previous one has left the area. Relatedly, most of my extended family is local, so I tend to be in town during holidays when others might be traveling.

So if you’re hoping for someone seasoned, consistent, reliable and trustworthy to look after your cat over the longer term, I’m a good bet!

Also, I’m semi-retired and able to go the extra mile in terms of flexibility, time spent, and leaving a welcoming environment and happy cat to greet you on your return. I’m pretty verbal (can you tell ;) and will take time to communicate thoughtfully about how and what your cat is doing while you’re away.
If you’d like, and time allows, I’m also happy to bring in mail and packages, water a few plants, or move outdoor refuse bins for pickup.

Finally, I want you to know how much I delight in your kitties! Caring for them is never ‘just a job’ to me. They make me smile and laugh, often. Thanks for sharing them with me!

Learn More About Bea

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I’ve always shared my home with cats and I have been fortunate to have primary care of them. I now serve my own kitty and have been offering drop-in cat care services in Berkeley since 2024, with positive results and many repeat clients.

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

I love the challenge of gaining a cat’s trust and enjoying the fruits of that, whether it be playing, pets, brushing, cuddling, or just being companionable in the same space. The variety of feline personalities and behavior, and the discovery of these with each unique kitty, is also fun and interesting and keeps me on my toes! That said, I’ve met the nicest and most interesting variety of humans, too! It has helped me feel that much more connected to, and appreciative of, my community.

Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?

It’s really hard to choose just one! When I first began, I especially enjoyed the goofy fun of caring for kittens; I still do, but as time goes on I’ve developed a special appreciation for quite a few senior cats, as well as the three (or four or five -) ring circus of caring for multiple kitties in one visit!

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

I have a scary-smart gray tabby named Sally who is now five. She was a double rescue - rescued from a rescue - so her past is a bit mysterious.. She is a tiny cat (7 lbs) with definite opinions and a big personality!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

Try to meet them at your home if at all possible; I have had a few potential clients show ambivalence as to whether an in-person visit is necessary, and I’ve always encouraged a meeting whenever possible. In my experience there’s no substitute for a quick in-home visit when it comes to meeting cats and their humans, seeing where things are and whether the dynamics and environment feel like a good fit. Also, communicate with your potential sitter about realistic time expectations. A 20-minute visit to a 3-kitty household where the cats need lots of care for health or temperamental reasons may not be realistic; conversely, a solo cat who prefers her own company and has an auto-feeder may not need an hour.

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

As mentioned, I like to meet with clients in their home. l listen as they describe their cats’ habits and needs and their own concerns. Usually care expectations are realistic (on the rare occasions they are not I try to be clear about that in as kind a way as possible). I make sure I know where the cat care things are in their home, how they like waste disposed of, how I will gain access and how to return any keys. I ask about their preferences for photos and texted updates during care visits. Most fun is learning about cat personalities and preferences and, hopefully, interacting respectfully with the kitties themselves around their humans, before visiting them on my own. I rely most of all on good communication and respect to establish a good relationship with both cat guardians and their kitties.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

I ask about any health issues and make a point to get vet info and cat carrier location, just in case. Of course I make sure kitties have water and food. I give medication as indicated. I let clients know of anything that seems off while they are away and we decide what, if anything, needs to be done about it. I am careful when coming and going to block the doorway so cats cannot get out, and make sure no window is open wide enough to get through unless it is the cats’ usual habit. I note details of keys, locks, codes and/or security systems, and find out how I should return house keys, if using. I make sure we can reach each other while the client is away. I do all I can to prioritize the safety and security of your cat and home. I appreciate your trust!

Are you usually available during holidays?

I really try to be. I’m in a period of my life where I’m traveling less frequently so I’m often available for cat drop-in visits for at least part of most holidays. It definitely helps with availability when clients book well ahead of their desired dates. .

What is your favorite cat toy?

I have two: plastic springs because it’s so fun to bat them around (my own cat likes to spike them at me, volleyball style) and a long snake, I mean, shoelace. Wand toys are also a big hit.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

I try to have them see, or at least hear, me interact in a calm and friendly way with their people during a meet and greet and get my body down to their level. If their human approves, I may give them treats. On my care visits, I give them time and space and move around their home as gently and predictably as possible while I prepare their food. Once they’ve eaten and had a little time to adjust to my being there, I sit quietly and let them initiate contact. I might try offering a few more of their cat treats or a favorite toy if the vibe seems right. Usually, by the time a booking period has ended, we are friends.

My cat was lucky to have Bea’s care for two weeks. Bea really loves cats and she did everything as asked, sent daily photos and detailed updates, and left my home cleaner than when I left. She is confident and caring, and that made my vacation time stress-free.

Bea was super with Jumper. She sent photos everyday and a quick report of their visit. Jumper isn't the friendliest of kitties, but warmed to Bea almost immediately. I was stress free knowing Jumpers care was in good hands.

Meowtel is a marketplace that connects cat parents with independent sitters. For eligible reservations booked and paid for through Meowtel, the Meowtel Promise explains how we support cat parents if something unexpected comes up.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

Berkeley cat sitting rates will vary based on the sitter's experience and services, but the average price is $37.00. Prices depend on visit duration (20, 45, or 60 minutes) and whether you need drop-in visits or overnight stays.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!
