What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

My family has always had cats and I have been fortunate to have primary care of them. I now serve my own kitty at home and have been offering drop-in cat-care services in my community since November 2024 with positive results and repeat clients.

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

I love the process of gaining a cat’s trust and enjoying the fruits of that, whether it be playing, brushing, cuddling, or just being together in the same space. The variety of cat personalities and behavior, and the discovery of these with each unique kitty, is also fun and interesting and keeps me on my toes!

Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?

I’ve had a variety of great ones, but recently was fortunate to have a job caring for a pair of 4-week-old kittens; interacting with them and watching them play with each other was hilarious!

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

I have a scary-smart gray tabby named Sally who is now four. She was a double rescue - rescued from a rescue - so her past is a bit mysterious.. She is a tiny cat (7 lbs) with a big personality!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

Try to meet them in person at your home if at all possible; I have had a few potential cat parents show ambivalence as to whether an in-person visit is necessary, and I’ve always encouraged a meeting whenever it was feasible. In my experience there’s no substitute for an in-home visit when it comes to seeing if the relationships and environment seem like a good fit.

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

As mentioned, I try to meet with them in their home. l listen to their description of their cats’ habits and needs and their humans’ own concerns. I get clarification if needed. Usually expectations are realistic (on the rare occasions they are not I try to be clear about that in as kind a way as possible). I make sure I know where the cat care things are in their home, how they like waste disposed of, how I will gain access and how to return any keys. I ask about their preferences for photos and messages during care visits. Most fun is learning about cat personalities and preferences and, hopefully, interacting respectfully with the kitties themselves around their humans, before visiting them on my own. I rely most of all on good communication and respect to establish a good relationship with both cat parents and their kitties.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

I ask about any health issues and make a point to get vet info, just in case. I make sure kitties have enough water and food, of course. I give medication as appropriate. I let cat parents know of anything that seems a little off while they are away and we decide what, if anything, needs to be done about it. I am careful when coming and going to block the doorway so cats cannot get out, and make sure no window is open wide enough to get through unless it is the cats’ habit to go in and out. I note details of keys, locks, codes and/or security systems, and get an understanding of how I should return house keys, if using. I make sure we can reach each other while the cat parent is away.

Are you usually available during holidays?

I really try to be. I’m in a period of life where I’m traveling less frequently so I’m often available for cat drop-in visits at least part of most holidays .

What is your favorite cat toy?

I have two: plastic springs because it’s so fun to toss them around (my own cat likes to spike them at me, volleyball style) and a long snake, I mean, shoelace.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

I try to have them see me interact calmly with their people during a meet and greet. On my care visits, I give them space and move gently and predictably. Once they’ve had a little time to adjust to my being in their home, I sit quietly after feeding them and see if they approach. I might try adding a favorite toy into the mix or parent-approved cat treats. Usually, by the time care has ended, we are friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Berkeley cat sitting rates will vary based on the pet sitter's experience and expertise, but the average price for a cat sitter is $37.00. Prices will also depend on how long your cat needs company for, whether that be a drop-in visit or overnight stay in your home. Meowtel sitters offer 20, 45, and 60-minute drop-in visits that allow for fully tailored care for your kitties. Your caregiver may also need to charge a little more if they have to travel far, so we'll match you with the best options which are close by.

Every Meowtel cat sitter has been thoroughly vetted, background-checked, and is insured through Meowtel on eligible reservations via our Meowtel Promise. To ensure total peace of mind while you're away, every Meowtel reservation comes with a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can have full confidence in your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress for your kitties. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend that you book daily visits with your sitter to keep your cats in their routine and to help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each Meowtel cat sitting visit will include the whole 9 yards: feeding, refreshing the water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, as well as any special requests you may have. We know every kitty is different and that's why we offer tailored, in-home services since cats don't do well outside their own homes. Plus, every reservation comes with a free Meet & Greet so you can meet your sitter before you leave to ensure it will be a purrfect fit.
