I'm August | Cat Sitting in Portland, OR

Hi fellow feline-loving friends! My name is August (they/he) 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 and welcome to my cat-sitting page. I’m honored that you’re considering me to care for one of the most important members of your family. Please read below to learn more about me and the services I offer! About Me I am a highly attuned, cat obsessed, professional full-time cat sitter. I live in Portland with my two 15-year-old kitties who are my world. I’ve had them both since kittenhood, and they are still going strong! Karley is my cuddly tortoiseshell calico who has kidney disease and asthma (she takes daily oral meds and uses an inhaler). Blake is my talkative tuxedo who loves to perch on my lap — she’s doing that as I write this! I’ve been working with cats since 2015 and have been a full-time cat sitter for over three years. My earliest memory is meeting a stray cat who jumped into our backyard, and from that moment on, I’ve had an unwavering love for cats. My dream was to work with them professionally, and for the early part of my adult life, I pursued veterinary medicine. To prepare for vet school, I worked as a veterinary technician at an emergency animal hospital, as the lead caretaker for a neonatal kitten program at a rescue, and at a busy cat boarding hotel. Any free time I had, I spent volunteering at local shelters, practicing Trap-Neuter-Return for the feral cats in my community, and fostering senior cats and kittens. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Biology and even attended a semester of veterinary school before realizing that my high sensitivity and intuition weren’t suited for the high-stress, emotionally intense environment of clinical veterinary work. Witnessing animal suffering daily took a toll on me. That’s when I rediscovered my love for cat sitting. It allowed me to use my medical knowledge while providing compassionate care in a calm, loving environment that’s much less stressful for the cats, too. I now focus on providing exceptional in-home care, especially for cats with special needs, medical conditions, or anxiety. This is not a side gig, it’s my career and passion. Types of Cats I’m Experienced With I’m confident and comfortable caring for: ⚡️ High-anxiety cats who require behavioral understanding and possibly medication 💉 Diabetic cats needing insulin injections 💨 Cats with asthma who use daily inhalers 💧 Cats with kidney disease needing subcutaneous fluids and oral meds 🐱 Breed-specific care for Sphynx, Persian, and Bengal cats 🐈‍⬛ Seniors with mobility or health issues 🐈 Kittens and high-energy cats who need structured play 🐅 Shy or semi-feral cats who need patience and gentle energy And of course, if your kitty is healthy and low-maintenance, I’d love to care for them too! If your cat has special needs, please mention those in your booking re...

What is your favorite cat toy?

Wand toys are my favorite because they are directly interactive between human and feline! It creates a bond, and we both are having fun. I like the rainbow ribbon wands with the clear handle best. The "Cat Dancer" (a wire with cardboard tufts at the ends) and "Da Bird" (iykyk) are also classics. Catnip dipped toy mice, little springs, laser pointers, and toy puzzles are fun too!

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

Routine is a cat's best friend, especially for scared kitties. I keep things as close to the same as possible as when the kitty's parents are around. I also am patient, gentle, slow, and never push any boundaries. I am an expert at cat body language, and can tell when it's time to give them a break. Sometimes it takes a few trips for especially anxious cats to come around, but it's always so rewarding to earn the trust of a shy kitty.

August did a FANTASTIC job for me and my Kitties. They provided prompt daily updates, with some of the best photos I've ever had taken of them. My usually on the shy-side-of-life felines opened up to them almost immediately. August had them playing and living their best lives. I think that's partly due to August's lovely, warm energy. I highly recommend August for your cat sitting needs.

I can’t say enough nice things about August. I’ll be concise with a list of adjectives— professional, kind, calm, thorough, tidy, reassuring, and responsive. I feel safe and secure that our kitties are in good hands while we are away. The peace of mind we will have for our next trip after this experience with August will be invaluable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Portland cat sitting rates will vary based on the pet sitter's experience and expertise, but the average price for a cat sitter is $28.00. Prices will also depend on how long your cat needs company for, whether that be a drop-in visit or overnight stay in your home. Meowtel sitters offer 20, 45, and 60-minute drop-in visits that allow for fully tailored care for your kitties. Your caregiver may also need to charge a little more if they have to travel far, so we'll match you with the best options which are close by.

Every Meowtel cat sitter has been thoroughly vetted, background-checked, and is insured through Meowtel on eligible reservations via our Meowtel Promise. To ensure total peace of mind while you're away, every Meowtel reservation comes with a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can have full confidence in your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress for your kitties. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend that you book daily visits with your sitter to keep your cats in their routine and to help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each Meowtel cat sitting visit will include the whole 9 yards: feeding, refreshing the water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, as well as any special requests you may have. We know every kitty is different and that's why we offer tailored, in-home services since cats don't do well outside their own homes. Plus, every reservation comes with a free Meet & Greet so you can meet your sitter before you leave to ensure it will be a purrfect fit.
