Hi, I’m Kelda and I have been a pet parent my entire life and have been professionally cat sitting for 2 years. I love cats and understand a good amount of cat behavior due to my many years of volunteering at Oakland Animal Services, as well as fostering for various animal rescues.

I have a lot of experience with shy and fractious cats and have worked with feral and former feral cats. whether it’s just a quick check-in or medication needs, I’ve handled most everything.

At home, I have four indoor cats. I also take care of a backyard feral colony that includes 4 cats. I work in marketing and primarily work from home, which gives me a good amount of flexibility in my day to make house visits for my clients.

I primarily like to take care of cats in the Oakland area but am open to traveling further.

Learn More About Kelda

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I’ve been cat sitting for friends and neighbors for 10 years and professionally for about 2 years. It has mostly been on a referral basis and I never advertised my services but it is something I’ve always enjoyed doing. I’m excited to expand my services and availability and I look forward to meeting your furry friends!

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

Getting to know the cats! Just like people, each one is unique with their own special quirks. I love interacting with them (or not, depending on if they’re shy or nervous around strangers - one of my cats is very nervous around new people so I get it). I especially have a soft spot for the undersocialized kitties, who just need a calm presence to feel safe.

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

I have four kitties in my home - Toulouse, a fluffy grey cat, Mama Cow, a reformed feral cat (we joke she is from the “Old Country”), Oleander, a petite toothless wonder, and Cotton, my Grand Dame who has a lot of opinions on everything. Additionally, I have a feral cat colony in my backyard that consists of Boo-Boo and Mama Boo, a bonded pair of fluffy black siblings, Wren, a former Cat Town cat that needed an outdoor placement so I volunteered by backyard, and Paco, a tuxedo cat who showed up one day a year ago and never left.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

Ask lots of questions and also give lots of information! Cat sitters don’t know your kitty as well as you do so all information is appreciated!

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

Communication, and lots of it! I start with meeting them in advance, going over all the details and meeting their kitties. This is also when I pick up the key or make plans on how I will access the property. While they are away, I send text updates that include lots of photos and video of their babies. I also provide updates on anything that may be important (there was a barf, someone is refusing food or not feeling well, etc.). Even if it seems small, I share it. I also like to do a short check-in once they return, just to make sure everything is good. That can be in-person or via text.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

No windows open and the doors are always closed and locked. If there is an alarm system, it is armed once I leave.

Are you usually available during holidays?

For the most part, yes. Looking at my calender is the best way to see what, if any, holidays I will be taking off.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

You stay calm and you let them be. There’s no point in forcing them to do something they’re uncomfortable with (unless it involves medication or something that they have to have). But, if I have a client with a timid or anxious cat, I make sure I have all the information I need from the client about their triggers, tips on how (or if) they like to interact, etc. when I visit, I follow that information and also accept that the cat is working on their own schedule and comfort level.

Kelda is simply amazing! Both of my boys are extremely shy around new people. During the meet n greet Kelda was able to pet one of them… a great start indeed! During the 13 days I was away, she sent daily photos/videos and shared progress updates of how the boys were coming out of their shells. After only a couple of days, Mister Coffee was glued to her side. Ralph was a bit slower to warm but eventually came around for short lap visits and brief brushing sessions… also a big win. Kelda went above and beyond… my boys have high maintenance feeding routines. I will not hesitate to book Kelda again. I felt so at ease with her being in my home and taking care of my boys.

Kelda is exceptional! Our cats can be challenging because they hide really well from strangers. Kelda made sure they were cared for and accounted for and provided great daily updates with photos and videos. We would not hesitate to recommend Kelda or hire her again.

If you looked up “exceptional” in the dictionary, you would find a picture of Kelda. One of my cats has bathrooming issues and she learned how to express his bladder in her spare time. While I was gone, ants invaded my home and she cleaned them up. The videos she sent were great, my boys are very happy to see her. She is my go to cat sitter!! :-) She is a wealth of knowledge and I appreciate her time and effort.

Meowtel is a marketplace that connects cat parents with independent sitters. For eligible reservations booked and paid for through Meowtel, the Meowtel Promise explains how we support cat parents if something unexpected comes up.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

Oakland cat sitting rates will vary based on the sitter's experience and services, but the average price is $40.00. Prices depend on visit duration (20, 45, or 60 minutes) and whether you need drop-in visits or overnight stays.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a Meet & Greet!
