What I like most is being honored with a cat’s trust. Of course most are cautious, even skittish or scared at first. They’re cats, after all. They need to set the pace in a new relationship. So I offer myself as a patient friend... I’m Steve, and I’ve been parent or second parent to nine cats — adopted from shelters, feral or abandoned — wildly different personalities. I’ve loved them all and they’ve returned it. My life wouldn’t be full without them and all the neighborhood cats that have passed through from time to time.
What I like most is being honored with a cat’s trust. Of course most are cautious, even skittish or scared at first. They’re cats, after all. They need to set the pace in a new relationship. So I offer myself as a patient friend. There’s nothing like having a cat trot over to greet me when I come in the door, ask to sit with me for awhile, or sleep on my leg. Those are the rewards.
Most cats that have been part of my family have been healthy and lived long—from 12 to 22 years. Luckily, neighbor cats I’ve sat never had a serious crisis.
All have challenges at times. Learning to pee only inside the litter boxes. Throwing up on a carpet. Aging. So I’m also familiar with picky eaters, special diets, emergency vet runs and giving the usual medications—pills, ointments, ear drops, even sub-q fluids (though I won’t do that alone).
I’ve recently retired. Now I have time to sit with other people’s cats — an opportunity to meet and care for more of these amazing beings.

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?
I'm new to paid cat sitting, but have taken care of many cats of friends for decades. I've jumped in to help with emergencies, and made sure everyone's happy with food, clean litter, safety and companionship.
What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?
My goal is to get cats to trust me. Some are immediately welcoming, accepting a head rub or even a combing. Most of the time, though, it takes more than one visit to become good friends. It's their home, their territory, and I like learning their rules. Being accepted, in the end, is my reward.
Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?
Celo is an impish ginger boy, about two years old. His big - really big - brother is B-boy. A stocky tux, he thinks he's in charge.

Very glad to have Steve to take care of my 2 gatos. Like most cats, they have strong likes, dislikes, habits, and I have definite ways I like them to be cared for. Steve respects all of those (how much crunchies they can have, when to feed wet food, making sure they have clean water/bowls, which are the ‘cat spoons’, etc.). He also knows to look for little ‘accident’ spots and leaves everything super clean. He’s had his own cats, from kittens to elders, and loves them all. It’s a bonus that my 2 guys trust him and consider him now a part of their extended family.

Frequently Asked Questions
Reservations officially begin at 12:00 AM in the sitter's time zone on the start date. Cat Parents may cancel within 24 hours of booking and receive a full refund, as long as the reservation has not yet started. After the first 24 hours, the following cancellation rules apply:
- More than 48 hours before the reservation start date: Full refund. The sitter will not receive any earnings.
- 24–48 hours before the reservation start date: 50% refund. The sitter will earn 50% of their planned earnings.
- Within 24 hours of the reservation start date (or after it has begun): No refund. The sitter will earn 100% of their planned earnings.
All refunds are initially applied to the Cat Parent's Meowtel Account Balance for use toward a future reservation or tip. Funds may be returned to the original payment method at any time.
Meowtel is a marketplace that connects cat parents with independent sitters. For eligible reservations booked and paid for through Meowtel, the Meowtel Promise explains how we support cat parents if something unexpected comes up.

Oakland cat sitting rates will vary based on the sitter's experience and services, but the average price is $40.00. Prices depend on visit duration (20, 45, or 60 minutes) and whether you need drop-in visits or overnight stays.
