What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I’ve been cat sitting for nearly 30 years. I’ve taken care of kittens to elderly cats. I’ve cared for them in various stages of health as well.

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

I love meeting new cats. I love seeing their beauty and getting to know their personalities. Each cat I care for is special and I look forward to seeing them.

Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?

One of my clients has a cat, Felix. He’s the sweetest boy and always greets me with happy meows and chirps. He’s fallen asleep on my lap several times. I love watching him!

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

Beckham Benedick Armani and Myfanwy Miuccia Prada. My first cat was named C.K., which was short for Calvin Klein. With my last name being Halsten, I decided all my furkids must have a fashion designer’s name. (And I know the designer spelled his name Halston, but the idea is the same! 😁)

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

Looking at profiles lets you see a snapshot of the sitter. Make sure you read reviews and chat with the person you’re thinking of hiring. If I was going to hire a sitter to watch my cats, I would arrange to meet them in person to see if it’s a good fit. Schedule enough time to do this before you’re going to need a sitter so you have time to find someone else before you leave. Keep in mind your needs and the needs of your kitties when you look to choose.

Are you usually available during holidays?

Yes, I am usually available for holidays. I do have a holiday rate increase, so that would be something to keep in mind.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

If a cat is timid or anxious, and many are for sitters, I enter the house quietly and calmly. I always say hello to the cat, even if I don’t see them, they can hear me. I will keep talking to them throughout the visit just so they can hear my voice. If I know where their hiding places are, I will go look for them so I can make sure they’re okay and they can see me. (It also lets me take photos for their families.) If the kitty ventures out, I’ll hold out my hand to let them sniff me while continuing to speak quietly and offer treats if it’s okay. I never try to pet the kitty unless they initiate contact. If at any time, their body language indicates fear or stress or if they growl or hiss, I immediately leave them alone.
