What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I first started cat-sitting in the early 2000s and have worked at a cat boarding facility. My day job includes working with cats so I have lots of experience keeping them safe.

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

I love cats and enjoy getting to know their unique personalities, preferences, and quirks. Helping them feel at ease and watching them grow more confident makes me so happy.

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

My babies are named Brooklyn (10yrs) and Broderick (1yr). Like most cat owners, I'm obsessed with my kitties and spending time with them is my favorite part of my day.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

I suggest not waiting till the last minute to think of everything your cat needs. Keep a log for a week and keep adding to it as you think of what you want to request from a cat sitter. That same log can be used as a checklist for your sitter.

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

If you don't already have a log/checklist, I'll help you create one over the course of the first few pet sitting sessions. I like to text my cat parents when I arrive, leave, and have completed certain tasks like giving medications. The texts reassure you and serve as a record for me.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

When I enter the front door, I use a large bag to block the entrance so no darting kitty can zoom past me as I come into your home. I then check that all doors, windows, and doggy doors are closed and locked at all times. I use that same bag technique as I leave in case a kitty wants to try and escape. I have a "darty kitty" myself and have daily practice ensuring he doesn't get outside.

Are you usually available during holidays?

Yes, I'm used to working holidays my whole adult life. Besides, your cat is more fun and interesting than my in-laws.

What is your favorite cat toy?

Whatever your cat loves. Each cat is different. Some prefer toys that mimic hunting bugs, lizards, snakes, rodents, and/or birds. It's important to let the cat "win" at hunting and help them feel successful.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

Using Fear-Free techniques has given me the practice on how to ease animals' FAS; Fear, Anxiety, and Stress. I'm passionate about helping animals create positive associations with my petsitting visit. I use treats, slow movements, gentle handling, low voice, and calm energy to soothe their nerves. I believe in treating all animals with the love and respect that their human-parents hope for and expect. One of the greatest joys in life is when a cat relaxes and shows me that they trust me and give me a few slow blinks of acceptance.
