Cat Sitting in Lititz, PA

Hello and welcome fellow fur parents.

Likely, the most indisputable trait my mother instilled within me and my 2 sisters during our upbringing is our overwhelming appreciation, love, and concern for cats. I've noticed that some dog owners (my wife previously included) feel as though they are able to look down on cat owners (a.k.a. fanatics) because of being perceived as 'lazy pet owners' since we are not required to interact with them as often as dogs. But I wholeheartedly disagree in that many of us cat owners realize that we are in fact more engaged with our feline friends than others would be with their dogs to make them the pets we hope for them to be.

Fur Babies:
1. Thor, our first young adult male cat, acts like a dog and I am his master. When he isn't napping, he often intentionally seeks me out to be near me. While preparing food in the kitchen, he stays between my legs and moves back between them every time I move from one place to another...

While preparing food in the kitchen, he stays between my legs and moves back between them every time I move from one place to another. When I sit in my recliner he hops into my lap and sprawls out so that I can rub what most cats consider the 'danger zone' the belly and he snoozes with his paws tucked up into his chest. I can't have an entire night of comfortable sleep without him being either hammocked between my legs, tucked under my arm, or (more often than I would like to admit) crammed face-first into my butt while I try to sleep on my side.

2. Nevé, our 2nd fur-baby (generation 2), was adopted from my sister's unintentional collection of cats and kittens at a local (to her) barn. Nevé is a French word of Latin origin that means 'field of granular snow' which suits her perfectly as she is a beautiful fluffy white color with 2 grey highlights: one on her forehead and one on her tail. She is 3 years old and has taken to my wife from the start. As I initially described her, she is the most INTENSE LAP CAT I have ever met. She often and instantly asserts herself into the lap (of my wife more than mine) and takes instant comfort in knowing she is loved.

3. Our 3rd fur-baby (generation 2) is Loki. He is also from the colony of cats that my sister has tried to keep in good health while also trying to control its expansion. The first visit I made to my sister to select a cat to adopt resulted in Loki (then called Isis) crawling up my clothing and jumping into my arms. Since he was not neutered, I didn't want to take a chance on his adoption until that had been done. I wanted to reduce the chance of either him or his stepbrother (Thor) starting to spray and causing issues with the furever adoption. On that first visit, I adopted Nevé instead but went back 2 months later to get this crazy guy.

It only took a few days for him and Thor to become BEST BUDDIES! It is heartwarming to see those two boys play throughout the house; flying squirrel moves; mutually attacking each other with their back paws into each other's foreheads (they keep their claws in) and eventually, one of them is always able to gently grab the other one by the throat. They stop, calm down, and then one of them takes off trying to entice the other to follow. Loki is a groomer and is often seen cleaning Nevé but more often Thor. He has also grabbed me with his paws to groom me which lets me know that I am family to him *awwww, how cute! *

4. Our and final (for now?) fur-baby (generation 2) is Dahlia. She is a petite little thing with coloring on her face that makes you think she is trying to smile while also trying to tell you she is disgusted with you LOL. She is one of a dozen or so cats that I had trapped and put through the TNR process that I found adorable. She has a tail that is so incredibly curled, that my wife was convinced that it was broken. As an unfriendly stray, it took some time until I was able to gain enough trust to allow me to pet her but once I did I was pleasantly surprised to see that is just the way she is built. She is still a relative newbie to the house so she has found common ground with all but Thor but he is a bit of a knucklehead and might just be determined to not like more than 2 other cats besides himself. She is a member of the family so Thor will eventually get over it.

Military Service:
I am a retired Army medic. My most valued award (this includes awards for tours to Iraq) is my MOVSM. It is a military outstanding volunteer service medal that I was awarded for all my time devoted to shelters and independent organizations in and around the San Antonio area. I spent entire days in Petco's and PetSmart’s showing kittens and cats both young and old. I documented each adoption that I was able to complete and can say that I proudly found 52 cats' forever homes.

*Since moving back to PA, I have also had 3 of the dozen cats that were TNRd find homes as well.

I don't take my integrity or your earned trust lightly and understand that if you were to select me to cat sit for you, you are actually leaving one of your most valued items in my care, a member of your family. I take that seriously.

As a retired service member, I have mostly embraced the 'house-husband' role by taking care of the house and fur-babies and preparing meals for the wife. Unless cat-sitting eventually demands most of my attention for the day (and I decide to focus on that solely) I have 2 minimal part-time jobs that usually take my attention for just a few hours a week, typically afternoons but luckily my weekends have been untouched.

My current fees:
********The previous iteration of the app allowed a 'radius' to be set which was 15 miles (straight line). Since Meowtel has updated (not necessarily an upgrade IMO), to this new ‘zip code’ selection it is more difficult for me to determine if I want to consider servicing the area based on travel time.
So, I am currently looking at the rates like this (this may change over time as I become accustomed to this new format and will shrink/enlarge my service area and/or the rates):
If you are within the zip codes I consider ‘local’ ($30 for a 20-minute visit, $41 for a 45-minute visit, and $50 for a 60-minute visit). It is progressively lower per minute as the investment of time/driving had happened just getting there so I can spend more time w/less impact on cost.

Please note, that Meowtel has a 30% fee associated with their app and services so the 30/41/50 rates are 21/29/35 respectively take-home.

I have selected most zip codes outside of ‘local’ and the rates are $40 for a 20-minute visit, $55 for a 45-minute visit, and $65 for a 60-minute visit. If your location ends up being at one of the far tips of my available service area then we may need to make a special arrangement on a case-by-case basis. I realize this is not the thing to get into to make money but if I am spending a great portion of my day on travel then this needs to be considered.

Again, Please note, that Meowtel has a 30% fee associated with their app and services so the 40/55/65 rates are 28/39/45 respectively take-home.

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I've been cat-sitting for over 2 years with a start around 1/2022 and have had nothing but positive experiences both with the fur babies and the parents. I attribute that to being a fur father myself and understanding how 'cat people' are and that baby talk isn't only for tiny humans.

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

While bursts of laughter from playing with kitties are fun, I truly enjoy when I start with an apprehensive kitty that hides upon my undesired (in the cat's eyes) arrival. With time and patience it eventually gets to where it looks forward to seeing my arrival. I know that 'belly rubs' are typically something that most kitties do not enjoy; I take great joy in building the bonds of confidence and regard they need to accept and even enjoy belly rubs.

Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?

I have one kitty in particular that reacts with overwhelming enthusiasm upon my arrival. When I enter clients houses I always give a greeting to the kitty/kitties there. With this one, I endearingly shout her name and what I get in return is what I would consider an aggressive reply back much akin to 'Where the h3ll have you been!?' to which I would respond that I missed her as well.

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

We (my wife and I) have 3. Thor (going on 6) was rescued as a baby stray kitten and according to my wife, is 'a typical cat'. Nevé (5 y/o) is the softest cat I have ever felt and cooed her way into our hearts. Loki (2ish?) is a rowdy young boy who makes a sound akin to 'laughing' as he runs through the house. Dahlia is a petite (2ish) young girl who has a tail that curls to the point it touches between her shoulder blades and trots with both rear feet as she sprints.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

Don't be scared to be what some would consider 'overzealous' in their instructions. As a fur-father, I know how I take care of my kitties and would insist that anyone coming into my home would do the exact same. With that, you are paying for a service that includes peace of mind knowing that whatever your desires in taking care of your kitties is completed. Tell the sitter every facet of what you expect. For good sitters, they will feel good knowing they are doing exactly what you wish.

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

So far, all my clients have had their babies for years. But, if I were working with one that is new to fur-babies I would encourage at least annual vet visits and not to buy garbage 'meow-mix' or any other Wal-Mart specials for their kitties. Sure, the good stuff is more expensive but it lasts weeks or months per bag.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

I often read stories on both FB and Nextdoor of people being distraught about their kitties getting loose. So, I make it a point to ensure nothing like that ever happens on my watch. 1. I take note of the functions of the door and have taken tools to better secure knobs, locks, and latches of homes. 2. Every time I enter or exit a home I make it a point only to focus on the floor in front/behind me to ensure that no kitties are trying to follow me out.

Are you usually available during holidays?

Yes although holidays are the time when cat sitters are needed the most so with the growth of my client base, I may eventually hit a restriction on holidays by only sticking with established fur babies (and their pawrents).

What is your favorite cat toy?

I love watching them attack and kick the catnip-filled crinkle toys with their back paws.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

I take particular pride in earning the trust of timid or anxious fur babies. With that, lengthy (beyond the established reservation time) amount of time by simply being present around those that are timid. Only with familiarity will they come out of their shell and familiarity is only possible with patience and good old-fashioned time.

Brian is a great cat dad and his love and knowledge of cats comes through right away! Brian gave me great advice on using a water fountain for my cats. My more outgoing cat took to Brian right away, but my shy cat eventually warmed up to Brian and came out of hiding after about 4 days, just as he promised would happen! My cats were well cared for and Brian’s communication was great. Highly recommend!!

Response from Brian

I truly enjoyed the Ace Ventura atmosphere that I felt. When I entered with either the morning or evening kibble, I felt as though kitties were jumping over me, around me, and under me on rejoyce! LOL.

Brian is an amazing cat sitter who allows me to have peace of mind while I’m away. Not only does he take great care of my kitties - he actually goes above and beyond to care for my home, as well. My youngest just realized she can hop on my kitchen countertops (oh, joy! 😫) and she knocked one of my small plants into the sink - causing the newly snaked drain to become backed up with dirt. Brian diligently vacuumed up the dirt 3 days in a row until it was gone! What a relief after being bummed that my expensive plumbing service was undone by my unruly kitten 🤦🏾‍♀️🤣. I truly appreciate the level of care he gives to my cats, myself and my home. Thanks so much, Brian!!!!

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!
