27 Years Of Veterinary Care Experience

I'm Amy

Cat Sitting in Johns Island, SC

Cats have been a huge part of both my personal and professional life for many years. With 27 years of experience in veterinary medicine, I’ve had the privilege of caring for cats of all ages, personalities, and needs—from kittens requiring around-the-clock care to senior cats who need a little extra patience and attention.

My love for cats extends well beyond my work in veterinary medicine. Over the years, I’ve helped feral and community cats, including trapping cats for spay and neuter, and I currently care for my own feral cat colony. I’ve also opened my home to numerous rescued and stray cats and have experience bottle-raising orphaned kittens...

I’ve also opened my home to numerous rescued and stray cats and have experience bottle-raising orphaned kittens.

Friends, clients, and coworkers have often called me a “cat whisperer,” and I think it comes from understanding that cats need to be approached on their own terms. I’m especially patient with shy, fearful, or cautious cats and enjoy earning their trust rather than forcing interaction.

My veterinary background has also taught me how important it is to notice the little things. I’m comfortable caring for senior cats, administering medications, and recognizing subtle changes in behavior, appetite, or overall well-being.

When I care for your cat, my goal is to keep their routine as familiar and stress-free as possible while giving them the individual attention they need. I’ll treat your home with respect, keep you updated, and most importantly, make sure your cat feels safe and cared for while you’re away.

Cats truly are a passion of mine, and I would be honored to care for yours.

Learn More About Amy

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I have been pet sitting for more than 30 years, caring for pets of veterinary clients, friends, and neighbors. While much of my pet sitting has been through personal referrals rather than a pet-sitting platform, caring for other people’s cats in their homes has been something I’ve done throughout my adult life. I also bring my years of veterinary experience, which has given me extensive hands-on experience with cats of all ages and needs—from kittens to seniors and cats requiring medications or additional care. Over the years, I’ve cared for many different personalities, including outgoing cats who want lots of attention and shy or fearful cats who need patience and time to build trust. I’m very comfortable reading feline behavior and adapting my approach to what makes each individual cat feel safe and comfortable. Between my veterinary career and passion for cats it has truly been a lifelong part of who I am.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

Safety is always my first priority. My years in veterinary medicine have taught me to pay close attention to details and never assume that everything is fine simply because a cat appears comfortable. At each visit, I make sure doors and windows are secure and am especially careful when entering and leaving so there is no opportunity for an escape. I follow feeding and medication instructions carefully, keep litter areas clean, and check that each cat is eating, drinking, eliminating, and behaving normally. I also pay attention to the home itself and will let you know right away if I notice anything unusual. Before leaving, I make sure your cat is safe and comfortable and that your home is secured exactly as you requested. Most importantly, I treat every cat and home with the same care and respect I would want someone to give my own.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

Timid and anxious cats have a special place in my heart. Through my years in veterinary medicine, rescue work, and caring for feral cats, I’ve learned that the best way to gain a cat’s trust is to let them set the pace. I never force interaction. I’ll sit quietly, speak softly, avoid overwhelming them with attention, and give them the opportunity to approach me when they feel comfortable. I pay close attention to body language and adjust my approach to each individual cat. Some cats may be ready for affection within minutes, while others may need several visits before they decide I’m trustworthy—and that’s perfectly okay with me. One of my favorite things is watching a shy cat gradually become comfortable enough to come out, investigate, and eventually ask for attention. I’ve been called a “cat whisperer,” but I think the secret is simple: patience, respect, and allowing cats to be cats.

Testimonial for Amy Coleman I have known Amy for over 15 years both professionally in a veterinary setting and socially. I hold her in the highest esteem with her veterinary skills. Though Amy is not a certified veterinary technician, her skill level is very equivalent to that of a veterinary technician. She is very good at assessing a situation and knowing how to handle cats and dogs of all levels of anxiety. Amy has great compassion for our furry friends. We call Amy the cat whisperer because she can usually calm most cats in the veterinary setting. Amy always has a great attitude and is fun to work with. Her people skills help her communicate to clients in a caring, but professional manner. I cannot say enough about her professionalism, work ethic, care of animals, and empathy for their owners. - Lynda Leffler, DVM

I have known Amy Coleman for over 20 years, starting when she was a trusted Vet Tech at my veterinarian’s practice. I learned to trust Amy’s advice there. And later when I needed a pet sitter, I was so comfortable having Amy care for MeowzaBob, my persnickety calico. Meowza warmed up to Amy quickly. (And Meowza doesn’t share her love with just anyone) And I love the fact that Amy has years of veterinary technician experience in case medications need to be administered or an emergency ever arises And it also makes me feel more comfortable as MeowzaBob ages. Amy has a love and compassion for all living creatures. She’s just an all around great person.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a Meet & Greet!
