What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I have been pet sitting for more than 30 years, caring for pets of veterinary clients, friends, and neighbors. While much of my pet sitting has been through personal referrals rather than a pet-sitting platform, caring for other people’s cats in their homes has been something I’ve done throughout my adult life. I also bring my years of veterinary experience, which has given me extensive hands-on experience with cats of all ages and needs—from kittens to seniors and cats requiring medications or additional care. Over the years, I’ve cared for many different personalities, including outgoing cats who want lots of attention and shy or fearful cats who need patience and time to build trust. I’m very comfortable reading feline behavior and adapting my approach to what makes each individual cat feel safe and comfortable. Between my veterinary career and passion for cats it has truly been a lifelong part of who I am.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

Safety is always my first priority. My years in veterinary medicine have taught me to pay close attention to details and never assume that everything is fine simply because a cat appears comfortable. At each visit, I make sure doors and windows are secure and am especially careful when entering and leaving so there is no opportunity for an escape. I follow feeding and medication instructions carefully, keep litter areas clean, and check that each cat is eating, drinking, eliminating, and behaving normally. I also pay attention to the home itself and will let you know right away if I notice anything unusual. Before leaving, I make sure your cat is safe and comfortable and that your home is secured exactly as you requested. Most importantly, I treat every cat and home with the same care and respect I would want someone to give my own.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

Timid and anxious cats have a special place in my heart. Through my years in veterinary medicine, rescue work, and caring for feral cats, I’ve learned that the best way to gain a cat’s trust is to let them set the pace. I never force interaction. I’ll sit quietly, speak softly, avoid overwhelming them with attention, and give them the opportunity to approach me when they feel comfortable. I pay close attention to body language and adjust my approach to each individual cat. Some cats may be ready for affection within minutes, while others may need several visits before they decide I’m trustworthy—and that’s perfectly okay with me. One of my favorite things is watching a shy cat gradually become comfortable enough to come out, investigate, and eventually ask for attention. I’ve been called a “cat whisperer,” but I think the secret is simple: patience, respect, and allowing cats to be cats.
