Cat Sitting in Madison, WI

Hello, cat-loving people of the Madison area! My name is Megan Nelson and I love crochet, games (video and board), and animals of all sorts, but especially cats. I would love to make friends with your feline(s) when you need a hand. I have owned and cared for cats for nearly my entire adult life (20+ years). I currently have 2 elderly felines (15 years old) and I also volunteer once a week at Madison Cat Project. I have experience giving various kinds of medications, as well as some experience with manually expressing kitty bladders (my little tortie developed some incontinence issues in the last few months; I received instruction from a licensed veterinarian on how to do the expressing properly). Other special care needs? I am always willing to learn. There is honestly not much of anything I wouldn't do for the well-being of our feline family members... My special talent seems to be with the shy/nervous cats. The first cat I owned had originally belonged to an old roommate of mine, and this kitty wouldn't let any people touch her pretty much ever. She did a lot of hiding under beds and behind couches. Within a week or two, she was spending nights in my room, sleeping next to my pillow. When my roommate could no longer keep her, she begged me to take her, because in 4 years she had never seen her bond remotely like that with another human. I sat for my brother-in-law's 3 cats about a year and a half ago. The shy one wouldn't even let his partner near her for months. She allowed me to give her head scratches on day 3 of my visiting them.

As far as conducting visits, I am currently only working part time, so I can be somewhat flexible. Because of my elderly bunch at home (we also have a 12 yr old husky in addition to the cats), I cannot do boarding, but I could likely entertain house-sitting/overnight stays if needed. I am more than happy to have a chat with you about you, your cats, and what you all need!

Learn More About Megan

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

When I was a teenager, I used to care for my aunt's cats when she was out of town for the weekend. Over the past decade-ish, I have been a go-to sitter for my neighbors across the street (2 cats), an old coworker of mine (2 cats), some long time friends of ours (2 cats), and my brother-in-law (3 cats, 2 chickens, and 2 lizards). I was caretaker for anywhere from just a weekend up to 3 weeks.

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

I have 2 cats, Jack and Casey. Jack is a sleek ninja of a black cat, and Casey is the sweetest tortie you will ever meet. Both are 15 years old.

Are you usually available during holidays?

Yes, I am generally available during most major holidays. Christmas is the main one that's likely to be difficult, as I travel to Milwaukee to spend time with my family.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

Slowly, and with patience. Approach them from the side, never straight on, and at their level. When looking in their direction, slow blink to show you are not a threat. Don't force yourself on them. Use high value treats to encourage them. Did they come towards you and sniff? Treat. Allow you to pet them? Treat. Try to just consistently show you're not a threat, and that good things will happen if they hang out with you.

Meowtel is a marketplace that connects cat parents with independent sitters. For eligible reservations booked and paid for through Meowtel, the Meowtel Promise explains how we support cat parents if something unexpected comes up.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

Madison cat sitting rates will vary based on the sitter's experience and services, but the average price is $23.00. Prices depend on visit duration (20, 45, or 60 minutes) and whether you need drop-in visits or overnight stays.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a Meet & Greet!
