What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

First and foremost, I like to have an initial video chat or in-person meet-and-greet with every new cat parent. This gives us an opportunity to get acquainted, discuss expectations, and go over the areas of the home relevant to caring for their cat. I also want to learn about the cat themselves—their personality, routines, likes and dislikes, comfort level with people, and anything that will help me provide care tailored to them. I’ll ask about feeding, medication if applicable, litter box routines, playtime, favorite activities, and any quirks or behaviors I should know about. We’ll also discuss household guidelines and what the owner would like each visit to look like. Some cats may want lots of playtime, attention, and cuddles, while others may prefer a quick check-in before having some space. I’m happy to follow their lead and respect their individual boundaries so they feel comfortable and cared for.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

I prioritize the cat’s safety by carefully following all instructions and guidelines provided by their parent and remaining attentive throughout every visit. I’m not treating a drop-in as simply stopping by to feed them. I’m there to be present and engaged with the cat and their well-being. I pay attention to their behavior, eating and drinking, litter box habits, energy level, and overall demeanor so I can recognize anything unusual that could indicate a potential health or safety concern. Even with a shy or independent cat, I give them the space they need while remaining actively attentive to their behavior, comfort, and overall well-being throughout the visit. I also make sure the home is properly secured when I leave, including locking doors and windows as instructed and returning keys exactly as requested. I’ll follow any additional instructions, such as closing blinds or curtains, and make sure everything is left as requested.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

When caring for a timid or anxious cat, I prioritize patience, space, and helping them feel safe rather than rushing interaction. During our initial meeting, I’ll learn their favorite places to relax or retreat, so I know where they feel most comfortable. During visits, I’ll stay within sight while giving them enough distance that they don’t feel crowded or overwhelmed. I also like to use treats to create positive associations and encourage curiosity. I may offer a handheld treat or open a favorite treat, such as a Churu, and let the scent and a calm welcoming voice invite them to approach on their own terms. I pay close attention to their body language. Once I see signs they’re becoming curious or relaxed, I may gradually move closer. Most importantly, I give them time to become comfortable with my presence and scent without pressuring them to interact before they’re ready.
