Cat Sitting in Eugene, OR
Cats and I seem to attract each other. That's been true since I was a child living on a farm in Maine.
Here's one recent example: I had stray 8 cats come to my porch in Meadville, Pennsylvania during the four years I lived there. They were all welcome including a mother cat who brought her 3 3 week old kittens across the street to live with me. They had heated shelters and plenty of food. They finally went to fostering six months later and were adopted quickly.
I pay attention to the needs of both the cats and their owners... I love cats and they unconditionally love me as long as they get what they want. I do know what is unhealthy for them (aka too many treats) but I maintain a middle way depending on what the owners want.

I am pretty good with the language of cats and know when they are distressed, happy, or restless.
I also have multiple years of experience volunteering at cat shelters in Oregon and Pennsylvania. My job was to clean litter boxes, feed designated foods, and spend time with each cat who wanted TLC and attention. Kitty litter cleaning is a norm for me as well as to note any abnormalities with stool samples or urine deposits.
I am a semi-retired interfaith transition minister. I've worked with 15 congregations around the US in the last 30 years. Nearly every place I've been has had stray cats arrive at my door. The cats I've had don't like other cats so the ones who come to my door are given safe and warm places to stay along with food and TLC. I schedule a vet visit soon thereafter to check for a chip and basic health exam.
Generally, I am available every day

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?
I have cared for stray and feral cats for many years. I lived in a small Pennsylvania city the last four years and had a small house with a porch. The cats in the neighborhood knew there was food and shelter every day. I had heated shelters and plenty of food year round. A mother cat brought her kittens over when they were about 1 month old. They all stayed on my porch for 5 months until I was able to get them into fostering and adoption. I also cat-sat for people in my neighborhood on a regular basis. In one way, I've cat sat all my life.
What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?
Taking care of someone else's cat(s) is a great joy to me because the owner doesn't have to worry about their animal companions when I'm on the job. I especially enjoy meeting new cats...all of whom have unique personalities and demands.
Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?
My most recent one involved taking care of a cat whose owner was away for the holidays. Every day at 9 am I would arrive to feed, clean, and play. The cat wasn't sure about me at first but later left her window to play and be brushed. The owner was very satisfied with my work and he got pictures every day.
Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?
I had two tuxedo sister cats for nearly 17 years named Mapo and Elsa. They traveled all over the US with me and finally died of old age when I was living the last four years in Pennsylvania. Shortly after Elsa died (she was the last of the two siblings), one of the stray cats who came daily to my porch demanded to come in. She was in heat and wanted to avoid all the males in the area. I took her to the vet for neutering and to see if there was a chip. I kept Grace and she now lives here with me in Eugene, Oregon.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?
Meet the potential sitter first and see how they interact with your cat(s). Does the sitter try too hard to be friends with the cat? Are they taking notes about your requirements for the sitting period? Do you as the customer feel intuitively comfortable with the potential sitter? Does the sitter feel comfortable with the cat(s) and the home?
What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?
After the person connects with me, we will schedule a meeting at their home. I'll then meet the cat(s) and get all the information I need for my cat sitting. Questions like: 'what does your cat like to eat?" "how about their desire for play?" Are there medical issues that need to be addressed?
How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?
Make sure doors and windows are shut and that there's no place where the cat(s) will be accidentally shut in after I leave. Generally, I will greet the cat first upon my arrival and spend some time with them. I'll then take care of kitty litter box before I put down food and water. I'll also check to see if the cat is having any unusual physical or mental issues during my visit. Cats prefer a predicable daily schedule so I always show up at the same time.
Are you usually available during holidays?
Yes, I am semi-retired and I live here in Eugene. I generally stay at home year round.
What is your favorite cat toy?
My cat - Grace the Tabby - loves feathers and in particular peacock tail feathers. She also loves laser lights but the peacock feather has become her absolute favorite.
How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?
Patience, patience, patience. Often, I will sit on the floor to be on the same level and I'll have some treats available. I also avoid looking into the eyes of a timid cat. I won't try to pet them until they make the first move. Oftentimes they will get bold enough to rub against my shoes or hands. That's a sign that they are feeling safer. I don't generally find that playing with cat toys too soon is helpful. I'll wait for them to bring the toy or sit by one. Then, it's playtime.

Alex is a cat lover and took great care of my two cats. I can tell because when I got home they were not snubbing me, which has happened with another sitter. This tells me they did not feel abandoned or neglected. Alex texted when he got here and when he left, and he sent photos, which I am used to from cat sitters. While both have always been indoor cats, one manages to run outside or get locked into closets because he is stealth-like. It was comforting for me to know Alex had eyes on them when he came and left. He always spent at least 30 mins with them.

Alex did a phenomenal job. At the meet and greet he showed genuine interest in our two cats and getting to know more about them and their preferences. He was consistent in his timing and providing us with photos and descriptive updates of how they were both doing each day. He went above and beyond the agreement by asking if we needed any plants watered and taking our trash bin to the curb. We will definitely ask for Alex again.

Alex took detailed notes and followed our feeding instructions closely. He was able to get our more timid cat to play laser and spent a little extra time with our two cats on Christmas day, which was a last-minute booking. We would love to have Alex watch our boys again.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.
Eugene cat sitting rates will vary based on the sitter's experience and services, but the average price is $25.00. Prices depend on visit duration (20, 45, or 60 minutes) and whether you need drop-in visits or overnight stays.
Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.
Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.
We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.
Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!

Alex was a wonderful sitter. He works with strays and rescues so is very knowledgable about cat behavior. He has a gentleness about him that cats find reassuring, I think. He did a great job taking care of our 2 cats while we were away. Highly recommend him!
