I'm Helena

Cat Sitting in Piscataway, NJ

Hello! I’m Helena, and I would love to cat-sit for your feline friends!

I grew up around cats as a child, and my love of all things cat bloomed as a young adult when I began fostering in my community in 2020. I partnered with Brooklyn Animal Action, the American Alliance for Protection of Animals, as well as Flatbush Cats as a cat foster and educator; through these groups, I successfully placed 8 cats and kittens into happy forever homes. I have a talent for helping anxious cats feel more at ease, and have worked with kittens, seniors, and cats all ages in-between.

My goals with Meowtel are to continue my legacy of making cats feel comfortable and happy...

My goals with Meowtel are to continue my legacy of making cats feel comfortable and happy even in the midst of their caretakers being away from home!

Cats are the most serene when they can rely on routine, which is why I approach cat-sitting with discipline. I also recognize the importance of observation and communication as a cat-sitter; when I’ve been out of town and cat-sitters have provided me updates on my kitties, I have felt such relief and gratitude for their willingness to keep me in the loop. I aim to keep the channels of communication open and to provide as many cute pictures as I can. It is difficult to be away from our fluffy friends, and I will provide as much comfort as I can to both caretaker and kitty alike.

I have a senior ragamuffin named Theodore who loves lurking in doorways, playing with wand toys, and eating Churu treats. (He was my first foster fail, and I’m so proud of the gentleman he has become.) When I am not caring for kitties, I am a virtual game show host, video editor, artist, and performer.

Learn More About Helena

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I have been cat-sitting for over 20 years! I have worked with cats of all ages as well as cats with special needs.

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

Meeting different cats is always so fun! I enjoy the detective aspect of learning a cat's likes and dislikes as well as the way to earn the cat's trust and affection. Cats are truly the best companions.

Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?

I once cat-sat for a litter of 6 kittens and a mother cat. When I tell you it was chaos, it was CHAOS (but the best kind). The kittens used me as a tree and I successfully convinced their mother that I was indeed up to the task to care of her babies. Each of the kittens was named after a different North American cryptid (ie. bigfoot, mothman etc.), and it was so fun to learn about each kitten's personality.

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

I have a senior ragamuffin named Theodore who is an introverted gentleman, and a client of Meowtel on occasion! He was my first and only "foster fail," and I'm so glad to be his person. He loves belly rubs and head scritches, and is the best alarm clock a girl could have!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

Stick with a cat-sitter who is going to be consistent with the times they show up. Cats thrive on routine, and come to expect certain things at certain times. A cat-sitter that is on-time and consistent with their care is the one to choose. (It also helps if the cat-sitter sends good pictures!)

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

I'm a notetaker, and like to take notes on every thing that the cat parent mentions to me. I always ask about the timing of meals, what kind of play a cat enjoys, if the cat has any special needs, and what the cat does NOT enjoy so that I get the full picture of what caring for the kitty looks like.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

I always lock the doors after entering the home and when I'm done cat-sitting, leave the windows closed, put away any potentially harmful play-time toys when they're not in use, and keep a general lookout for anything that could cause harm to the cat when I'm not around (ie. cords, appliances, precariously placed dishware).

Are you usually available during holidays?

Occasionally, yes!! Please ask me!

What is your favorite cat toy?

Wand toy with a feathered plushie on the end. A classic.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

I do not approach timid cats head-on; I take time to let them get used to the idea of sharing a space with me. I get on their level, avert my eyes, and if the vibe seems right, extend a finger or hand for them to sniff. From there, I ascertain what their comfort level is, and then potentially use some BRIBERY (aka treats)! Having worked with many anxious and timid cats through fostering, I've developed a skill for helping cats relax around me.

I couldn’t be more pleased with Helen as our cstsitter. this was our first time using this service, but it definitely won’t be our last. Helena was prompt, friendly, and (most importantly) took great care of our furry house goblins. She was able to administer pills to our older cat, scooped the boxes, played with the cats, and even brought in a few boxes on our porch. She’s really a total professional and we’ll be booking with her again when we take our next trip!

Helena was absolutely lovely with our cat, Graham. She was super attentive and engaged. As a former TNR cat Graham can be a little hesitant, but he loved her immediately. She did a wonderful job of taking care of him. Purrfect care!

Helena was the first ever cat sitter I hired while I was away on a trip. She was an absolute angel with my cat Sunny who was going through a UTI and had several medications. My cat absolutely LOVED her and she was wonderful, gave us several updates, photos, and reduced my anxiety a ton while leaving him behind while he was sick. Helena is someone I’d definitely trust with watching Sunny again!

Meowtel is a marketplace that connects cat parents with independent sitters. For eligible reservations booked and paid for through Meowtel, the Meowtel Promise explains how we support cat parents if something unexpected comes up.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!
