Hello, My name is Richard and I have always loved and rescued cats. I am a retired Information Technology Professional and now I can fulfill my passion of working with cats. My mother owned a rescue kitty named Scout. My mother loved cats as well and I promised her I would take care of Scout when my mother passed. Scout had a strong little spirit and she formed a special bond with me. So much so that I named my pet sitting service after her. To me, cats are not animals but family... To me, cats are not animals but family. With that comes a huge responsibility to keep them safe while in my care. I am extremely dependable, responsible and a strong communicator. Over the years, my wife and I have rescued 18 cats. We've been at it for about 30 years. We tended to adopt the cats that were not chosen because of age, medical issues or injuries that caused permanent vulnerabilties. I earned a Feline Behaviour and Psychology Diploma with Distinction from the Centre of Excellence located in England. I am currently studying feline anatomy and first aid. Your mind will be at ease knowing that your kitty is safe and receiving the best care possible.

Learn More About Richard

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

My wife and I needed a cat sitter for our cats. At the time, services such as this did not exist. We had a difficult time finding someone reliable. We went on our trip but could not fully relax because we were worried about our cats. I enjoy creating an atmosphere of trust with the owners so they can relax and have a good time. I also enjoy meeting the cat, making sure it is safe, the environment is clean and keeping the cat company so it experiences less anxiety. A purring cat is the most gratifying aspect.

Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?

I had one cat that was extremely fearful. The cat was always hiding when I arrived. I eventually gained the cats trust through various methods and the cat slowly began to appear. By the end of the visit, the cat would be sitting on my lap.

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

Yes, three recues. Uma, Ernie and Teddy Gogo. Uma is Ernie's mother and Teddy Gogo just showed up at our home, skinny, scared and hungry. After 6 months of gaining his trust, he is now neutered and fully vaccinated. He is also very happy and has no interest in going outside. He prefers the plush indoor life.

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

I would tell them to find someone that is extremely responsible and dependible. This is your pet and your home you are entrusting to a stranger initially. They should be background checked and insured. They should be intelligent and have enough life experience to handle any emergencies that might come up. They should be strong communicators and find out all about the cat and any special needs or preferences the cat may have. Food, allergies, places to sleep, toys or blankets it likes and helps them feel secure. Also and it seems obvious, find someone that loves cats and it shows. The owner should feel 100% certain about the pet sitter. Trust your gut. There should be a meet and greet to ensure a good fit. A good pet sitter asks many questions to provide the best possible care.

I feel really good having Richard taking care of sweet, old Nutmeg while we are out of town. He is detail oriented and knowledgeable, communicates well, and is very gentle and caring with our fragile old kitty. He even offered some suggestions we are trying out. We are going to have him care for her for two weeks in February and, although I feel very guilty leaving her, I know he will take good care of her and give her as much loving as he can. I trust him to make smart, compassionate decisions in an emergency too. I recommend him enthusiastically.

Meowtel is a marketplace that connects cat parents with independent sitters. For eligible reservations booked and paid for through Meowtel, the Meowtel Promise explains how we support cat parents if something unexpected comes up.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!
