I'm Dana

Cat Sitting in Fresno, CA

I am hoping to be of assistance to pet parents in the Fresno and Clovis Area. I am an older woman, age 50, who has been a fond friend of cats since I rescued my very first stray kitty from a freezing cold playground by packing her into my coat when I was 8 years old. My mom took such a liking to this cat and others, then, that she volunteered her time each week and eventually became secretary to the board of directors for the Bonneville Humane Society, and I was a regular Saturday worker there during my teen years. Our home was a busy foster home for stray cats, and I learned a lot about how to care for them. I've learned how to comfort and soothe them to deliver the rare but necessary baths or administer pills. I used to help my mom hold a nervous cat to administer his daily insulin shots, as the foster cat had diabetes. I took one of the former foster cats with me when I moved to go to college and I administered his medicine to him to heal from his painful ear mites... I took one of the former foster cats with me when I moved to go to college and I administered his medicine to him to heal from his painful ear mites. The process required patiently and gently rubbing his ears and repeatedly replacing him back onto my lap, as he kept hopping down. He hated the process, but he always got his treats right afterwards. While I was in college, I did a lot of volunteer cat sitting for friends and classmates before my career made me too busy for it. Since moving to California, I am usually living in apartments that make cat ownership difficult. The closest I can come is to stop and feed the stray kitties around the community, whenever I see them. I also search to find a good home for them. (2 California strays were recently adopted by my family members and friends way out in Idaho. That was due to me being a pest). When I bond with a cat, I still wish to see them sometimes, and give them my love. I have cared for so many cats in my lifetime: I understand that a cat's sharp claws require special pet nail clippers; I know not to use scissors, and not to clip too much! I recognize that a cat harness should be used, in addition to the kennel, when making a car trip to the vet - certainly never the choke hazard of a collar and a leash alone. I fully understand how a cat's claws make it easy to climb up a high tree but NOT back down again, and this is where they require human assistance. I also know that cats prefer to be up high, where they can get a full view of their surroundings, and it was for this reason I installed cat shelves for my energetic adopted cat to explore the house, before he passed away. I'm an older cat sitter, and I would like to say that with age comes more experience, but the truth is: anyone who has formed a bond with a cat knows what a special friendship that is. They know many of the ins and outs of cat care. All cat people tend to be calm, patient, gentle, nurturing and compassionate people, so I wish the best to all the other cat sitters here. It is a constantly rewarding learning experience!

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

Most of my cat sitting experience took place during my college years, which is a few decades in the rearview mirror but I was often called on for friends, classmates and a frequently traveling college professor who all knew I was definitely a cat person. Heck, I even took care of a ferret one week for a friend. I played with the ferret the same way I often did with a playful cat: repeatedly dropping the ferret into a full laundry basket and laughing as he kept crawling back to me to repeat the game. I have enough experience with other people's cats to know that they are often very shy and skittish around strangers. Do not be worried if the cat hides or resists being left with a new person. It is a lot like a child in a new school. They need some time to get comfortable.

Are you usually available during holidays?

I am available every holiday. It is not often that I travel but if I were going to leave town, it is most likely over the 4th of July. I'm always available and ready to cat sit for Fall, Winter and Spring holidays such as Easter or Christmas or Thanksgiving, but also just any holidays which fall inside the school year. I only ever leave town for the week of July 4th. I'm available for every other holiday all year round.

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

I bring along some cat calming pheromone spray and I have also found these days there are calming diffusers as well. For some cats, I might introduce a cat nip toy and that would make them happy, though I know cats are different: not all of them respond to cat nip. I am skilled with talking to cats in a very calm and soothing voice which usually helps to ease them and earn trust but I also know cats need plenty of time to warm up, so it is best not to rush them. I never stand over a cat. I always try to get down to their level to talk to them and if they want to hide for a while, I let them do that as long as they need to. I never rush a cat to feel comfortable. We have to go at the cat's pace.

Meowtel is a marketplace that connects cat parents with independent sitters. For eligible reservations booked and paid for through Meowtel, the Meowtel Promise explains how we support cat parents if something unexpected comes up.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

Fresno cat sitting rates will vary based on the sitter's experience and services, but the average price is $32.00. Prices depend on visit duration (20, 45, or 60 minutes) and whether you need drop-in visits or overnight stays.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!
