What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

I would say - take your time and make sure it’s a good fit, and that you feel comfortable. Make sure you meet the sitter, trust the sitter, and feel confident they can provide all the services you need (ex. Medication). Nothing beats having a great relationship with your sitter and feeling the peace of mind that your kitty is in great hands when you’re away. Taking the time to find that best fit is always worth it.

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

For new clients, I always plan a meet and greet with the parents and kitty before the actual sitting/visit date. During this visit, we go over everything that would be important to know or could be confusing, such as: where everything is (food, litter, etc), if the kitty is shy where their usual hiding spots are, if the kitty has any triggers or anything to avoid, if the kitty has any health concerns/medicine to be aware of, actually meeting the kitty so they’re comfortable with me/earning their trust, giving the parents an opportunity to get to know me and ask me any questions, etc! That way on the actual day of the visit, it’s smooth sailing and no surprises!

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

For cats that are timid or anxious, the best things are space and patience! I make sure to never sneak up on the cat or spook it. I often will sit on the floor far enough away that im not intimidating but still in view. I use slow movements and a low voice. Treats are also helpful in gaining trust. Sometimes just placing a treat nearby and allowing the cat to come on their own time and pace is the best way. Let them initiate when they are ready.

Frequently Asked Questions

Washington cat sitting rates will vary based on the pet sitter's experience and the services they offer, but the average price for a cat sitter is $26.00. Prices will also depend on how long your cat needs company for, whether that be a drop-in visit or overnight stay in your home. Cat sitters on Meowtel offer 20, 45, and 60-minute drop-in visits that allow for fully tailored care for your kitties. Your caregiver may also need to charge a little more if they have to travel far, so you can find the best options which are close by.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress for your kitties. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend that you book daily visits with your sitter to keep your cats in their routine and to help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each Meowtel cat sitting visit typically includes the whole 9 yards: feeding, refreshing the water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, as well as any special requests you may have. Every kitty is different and that's why sitters on Meowtel offer tailored, in-home services since cats don't do well outside their own homes. Plus, ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you can meet them before you leave to confirm it's a purrfect fit.
