Cat Sitting in New York, NY

Hi there!

My name is Alex and I am a total cat purr-son! I'm a performer, public speaking coach, and nonprofit arts worker and I recently left my full-time position at a non-profit arts foundation to find more of a work/life balance. I currently work remotely part-time so I have plenty of time to spend with your sweet fur babies!

I've been short-term and long-term pet sitting for a number of years in New York, Florida, Michigan. I grew up with cats, house sit for families with both both cats and dogs, and I have two bonded cats of my own that I adopted from outside a theatre in Sarasota, FL.

I think cats are the best because they know exactly what they want and they have to choose you...

I think cats are the best because they know exactly what they want and they have to choose you. One of my specialities is making skittish and uncertain kitties feel safe and comfortable, which is kind of how I fell into cat sitting. Once friends, neighbors, and neighbor's neighbors heard I was the 'cat whisperer' it all just sort of fell into place and I can't think of a better way to spend my time!

It can be hard when you head out town leaving your kitties behind, and it's my priority to make sure both you and your kitties feel happy and at ease. I know when we travel, we always want to find the right person who will take care of our pets and our home and I'm here to help!

During a visit/stay I will:
-Follow your feeding and care instructions
-Administer medication(s), if any
-Clean litter box(es)
-Play, cuddle, and spoil your sweet kitties!
-Send you occasional photos or videos of them doing adorable things
-Assist with watering plants, picking up mail, or other special requests

I so look forward to meeting you and can't wait to meet your cats and kittens!

Learn More About Alex

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I've been cat and dog sitting for my entire adult life and have been doing it regularly for about 5 years. I'm comfortable with single and multi-cat homes, tiny kittens, senior cats, cats who are territorial, and animals with special needs once trained on their specific care routines.

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

Getting to spend time with the kitties! I love learning their different personalities and earning their trust. Cats are so smart and I like to take things at their individual pace, so I take it as a compliment when they warm up to me. :)

Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?

I once house sat for a family with 4 cats and 2 shelter dogs while they were on vacation out of state. All of them had such different personalities and were all different ages so I felt like I was running my own little farm! It was the sweetest thing and I was constantly covered in a pile of animals. It was the BEST!

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

I have two kitties, Scout & Boo. Scout is a brown tabby and Boo is all black with bright eyes. We're not sure, but we think they may have some Maine Coon in them because they both have little ear points and are super fluffy. Boo only has one point though as he was a little street kitty and had his ear clipped at some point before we took them in from behind a theatre they were living around in Sarasota, FL. Scout is our super vocal, cuddly girl and Boo is our athletic little hunter. Scout likes to curl up on your head while you sleep and Boo used to be really scared of people when we first got him, but he's really come out of his shell over the past few years with patience and encouragement! We love them both dearly!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

I'd say to look for someone you would trust with your human kids. Kitties may not be humans, but they are sure a big part of my family! I always want to hire someone who I feel will take care of them like they are their own. Someone who will treat my home with respect and who will clean up after both themselves and my pets.

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

I like to start out by listening and learning about each cat and their family. Each cat family has their own way of doing things so I like to get the run down from the parents about both the cat(s) and household instructions first and then ask my follow up questions. I have my list of additional safety questions that I always go over as well (e.g. - do they ever try to get outside, vet/emergency vet, behaviors to watch out for that may be out of their norm, medications, etc). When meeting the kitties I like to let the parents and cats take the lead on this. If the kitty is shy, it may take some time to win them over and I'll respect their space to earn their trust.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

A lot of this is case by case and based on the individual home and cat needs, but generally being attentive, aware, and available. While cats can't tell you verbally if there is something wrong, they can tell you in changed behavior, increased vocals, bathroom patterns, increased or decreased food/water intake, etc.

Are you usually available during holidays?

Generally, yes! Over the past few years I have spent the holidays with furry friends while their families visit relatives.

What is your favorite cat toy?

Whatever will make the kitties happy make me happy! I do love when cats like to play catch with bottle caps though. I also love when cats love the boxes the toys come in rather than the toys themselves!

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

Again, this is a case by case basis, but calming treats, soft sounds/classical music, favorite toys, feliaway spray (calming pheromone to promote calm) , positive reinforcement by learning to associated me with treats or feeding time, and generally giving them time and space.

Alex was so incredible with my sweet but often spicy kitty, Bernie. Bernie has a bit separation anxiety and has been known to hiss at cat sitters previously. I gave Alex this warning but she willingly agreed to watch him and he had no issues with Alex at all! Alex sent me great updates, gave Bernie his anxiety meds, and sent videos at every visit and she even vacuumed for us before we came home! Could not recommend Alex more!!

Alex was incredibly impressive. She was so kind and lovely to my 18 year old cranky cat and made her feel cozy and comfortable during each visit. I loved receiving an update after every visit, with a play by play of activity and cute videos. Alex went above and beyond my requests and truly made me feel like my cat was in the very best hands.

literally the best sitter! it is usually hard for me to relax on vacations—I just get so worried about my cat, especially if a sitter is not communicative. but when Alex takes care of my Julius, I feel infinitely better and am actually able to relax! she is so diligent, compassionate, & highly experienced with animals—I can’t recommend her enough.

Alex did such a wonderful job taking care of Phoebe! She went above and beyond by vacuuming by the litter box and playing with Phoebe during her visit. I received nice photos/videos that put my mind at ease while I was traveling.

Meowtel is a marketplace that connects cat parents with independent sitters. For eligible reservations booked and paid for through Meowtel, the Meowtel Promise explains how we support cat parents if something unexpected comes up.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

New York cat sitting rates will vary based on the sitter's experience and services, but the average price is $30.00. Prices depend on visit duration (20, 45, or 60 minutes) and whether you need drop-in visits or overnight stays.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!
