Cat Sitting in New York, NY

I’m new to Meowtel, but not to caring for cats. I’ve loved and lived with cats with a broad range of personalities - lap cats, hunters, refined gentlemen, independent goofballs. It’s always a delight getting to know a cat and learning about their interests and passions!

As an adult I’ve had two cats of my own who lived well into their golden years, and I’m very accustomed to administering meds and offering gentle support to seniors...
I’m new to Meowtel, but not to caring for cats. I’ve loved and lived with cats with a broad range of personalities - lap cats, hunters, refined gentlemen, independent goofballs. It’s always a delight getting to know a cat and learning about their interests and passions!

As an adult I’ve had two cats of my own who lived well into their golden years, and I’m very accustomed to administering meds and offering gentle support to seniors. (Both my guys were hyperthyroid cats in their teens, both needed attention to keeping their weight up.) I know older cats take a light touch as they become more vulnerable.

I’m happy to do active play and engagement with your cats, or just keep them company while they cautiously acknowledge that mayyybe they appreciate not being alone. I know it can hard on you as well as your animal to spend time apart, and I want you to feel your cat is being treated fondly and thoughtfully while you’re away.

When I’m not hanging around with animals, I’m an artist, editor, and community gardener.

What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

Cat sitting was actually one of my first jobs as a tween (along with being a library page!). Honestly a bookish middle schooler is the ideal cat sitter - I’d play with the cat, and then sit and read with them all afternoon. As of the past few years I mostly work from home, and I don’t travel like I used to, so I’ve become a reliable resource for neighbors who might need emergency cat care. I’ve looked after shy single cats, raucous brother cats, cats who don’t like to eat alone, cats who *only* dine alone… truly, feline life is a rich tapestry.

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

At a meet-and-greet, along with the basics (feeding schedule, litter box, water), I like to get a rundown of what a cat is most likely to respond to (toys? Treats? Watching taxicabs out the window?) —and their favorite hiding places. I find that most cats will come out to at least see what’s going on with this interloper who’s here delivering their food, but for the cats who are deeply stranger-averse it’s reassuring to at least get a glimpse of them, even if they decline to come out until I’m gone! I also take notes on management strategies like lick mats, swaddling for meds if that’s how you do it, and grooming requests and preferences. Obviously a cat may behave very differently with a sitter compared to their beloved family, but knowing what their normal days are like makes a good template to aim for.

Are you usually available during holidays?

I am usually available during holidays (& local school vacation weeks). In April I’ll be splitting my time daily between Gramercy and the UWS - but that just widens my availability for that time! 🗓️❤️

What is your favorite cat toy?

Personally I think the cat dancer is an incredible toy - it’s so simple, and something in the bounce of the wire is deeply satisfying - but overall I’d probably say a wand toy with feathers. A lot of cats seem to appreciate the plausible deniability of “I’m not playing with some *human*, I’m stalking a birdie in the air!” And I’m fine with that. My own cats have loved them (although my late cat Oscar preferred watching me make the bird fly for hours on end, not actually hunting it himself…) and a cat who doesn’t know me well yet can still have a rich play session with a wand toy.

Kathleen is such a lovely person and an awesome cat sitter! Her updates were always super detailed with lots of pictures and videos, and it was clear my cat loved her company. She also did a great job administering ear drops for an ear infection! She was very reliable and thorough in her visits and really went above and beyond with playtime and treats. :)

Kathleen was an amazing companion and caretaker to my cat while I was out of town, and she was immediately ready and willing to add days to the booking after I got stuck across the country because of a big snowstorm. My cat is pretty shy but warmed up to Kathleen quickly and I got lots of great thorough updates of them playing and hanging out!

Kathleen was absolutely wonderful with my two cats! I have some pretty specific food instructions for my quirky pair, and she followed everything to the letter. Most impressively, she managed to help my shy cat come out of his shell, something not many people can do. Her updates were thorough and she was incredibly communicative throughout the entire stay. I felt completely at ease knowing they were in such capable, caring hands. Highly recommend!

Kathleen was exceptional - even though my cat was hiding, she went over and above to talk to her, keep her company, and even leave her hidden treats to keep her active.

Kathleen makes my life so much less stressful when I’m out of town - I know my kitty will be well taken care of with plenty of treats; cuddles, and play time. She’s also great at giving my senior cat her twice daily pills!

Meowtel is a marketplace that connects cat parents with independent sitters. For eligible reservations booked and paid for through Meowtel, the Meowtel Promise explains how we support cat parents if something unexpected comes up.

If it doesn't feel like a purrfect fit after a Meet & Greet or during a reservation, our support team is here to help at 1-844-Meowtel (1-844-636-9835). We'll take time to understand what happened and help you consider next steps, which could include help with a new reservation.

New York cat sitting rates will vary based on the sitter's experience and services, but the average price is $30.00. Prices depend on visit duration (20, 45, or 60 minutes) and whether you need drop-in visits or overnight stays.

Every cat sitter on Meowtel completes a background check. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet so you (and your kitties!) can feel comfortable with your sitter before you leave.

Cats are territorial animals and don't do well in new environments. The presence of other cats, dogs, and even birds in kennels or animal hotels cause an immense amount of stress. This is why Meowtel was created, so tailored in-home care is brought to you.

We recommend booking daily visits to keep your cats in their routine and help minimize feline anxiety while you're away.

Each visit typically includes: feeding, refreshing water bowls, litter box scooping, tidying up, medications, updates with photos, lots of playtime, and any special requests. Ask your sitter about a free Meet & Greet!
