What is your experience with cat sitting, and how long have you been doing it?

I have been consistently cat sitting for 3 years prior to joining Meowtel where I was sitting for friends and friends of friends who traveled often for work. This allowed me to form deep bonds with kitties across a wide range of needs and temperaments, as well as perfect the art of cat sitting!

What do you enjoy most about cat sitting?

I enjoy SO many things about cat sitting! The two that I value the most are cultivating a unique bond to each cat so that they quickly know that I am there to support them and keep them safe; and introducing them to exciting new toys and ways to play! I find employing the “fun uncle” strategy is super effective at brightening up their day and gives them something to look forward to for the next day :).

Can you tell us about your favorite cat sitting reservation?

I was really fond of an 9-night overnight reservation with the cutest orange tabby named Tony (named after Tony the Tiger). He had so much kitty energy that we could play for hours! Every time I would arrive he would jump right into my lap and begin purring incessantly for a solid 10 minutes — an experience like that could cure any ailment!

Do you have kitties yourself? What are their names?

I have 1 kitty named Jelly. She’s white with grey tabby patches and just under 2 years. I got her from the Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue shelter where I was a volunteer. I had noticed her always sheltering in a room of energetic 1+ yo cats, emaciated, and depressed, never wanting attention from humans despite being there for over 2 months. It was obvious that a shelter environment was not safe for her temperament so I requested to foster her. Fast-forward 4 months and I realized I could never give her away so I adopted her immediately!

What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a cat sitter?

It’s imperative you find someone who understands the ins and outs of not only caring for the direct needs of a cat (anyone can do that!) but also their emotional state, ie capable of fostering a bond and caring for their (your) home. You also need someone who understands the full responsibility of their role which isn’t as a cat-sitter, it’s as a substitute parent for their mom and/or dad. In other words, someone who naturally puts the safety and needs of your babies and your home above their personal time and profits, just like you, as their parent, would.

What is your typical process for working with a new cat parent?

It’s all about becoming the parent. I want to know what they know, all the details, so that I can match the cat’s expectations. No two households operate the same so it’s important to pay attention to the nuance, ask all the questions they could be forgetting to answer. Immediately following the Meet & Greet, I always create and share a google-doc that summarizes all the details. This is to ensure that nothing has been missed and to reassure the parent that their baby is in very capable and devoted hands.

How do you ensure the safety & security of the cats and the home while cat sitting?

Kitties are little escape artists! I always have a large tote bag for such occasions that I place in front of my legs as I walk through the door, both entering and exiting. It’s also important to get to know them as much as possible so that you become attuned enough to their mental and physical health to notice changes indicative of something that might need to be addressed. Lastly, staying in communication with the owner with detailed updates, questions & concerns, and photos is crucial to a cat’s safety in case there’s something concerning that I am less likely to notice.

I am available for any and all holidays throughout the year!

What is your favorite cat toy?

Go-Cat Purrpellar: 100% success rate for cats who love to play! It’s a little disappointing that the cats can rip it apart within a week of consistent play but it is cheap to replace ($9) and you can budget for a couple month with some weeks off so that they don’t get bored of it!

How do you handle cats that are particularly timid or anxious?

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution. Timidness & anxiety is on a continuum. The best way is to be introduced by the parent as they look to their parent’s behavior for signals about their own safety. When a parent is not around, the procedure is to stay low, quiet & still. This will help gauge where on the continuum they are. Often, timid cats are still curious. If you make yourself appear to be the least threatening, their curiosity can override their anxiety and they will cautiously approach to smell you. If they get to this stage, they’ll be purring in no time!

This was my first experience using a pet-sitting service and I couldn't have asked for a better experience! I was gone a full week out of country and felt a lot of guilt leaving my girl for so long. Sean set my mind at ease with his first visit, and by day 2 or 3 I was wondering if my cat would even miss me. So in a word, Sean was fantastic for my cat. She's a senior, timid, and extremely vocal, but he had nothing but praise for her. His communication and photos were the best and something I looked forward to each day. I could see in the photos how happy she was. ALL the stars from me and mine! 😺

Cancellation Policy

Customers may cancel within 24 hours of making their reservation and receive a 100% refund, and the sitter will not receive any earnings. After the first 24 hours, the following cancellation rules apply:

Customers will receive a 100% refund to their Account Balance if they cancel anytime up to 48 hours before the start date of the reservation, and the sitter will not receive any earnings.

Customers will receive a 50% refund, and the sitter will earn 50% of their planned earnings if the customer cancels between 24-48 hours of the start of the reservation.

No refund will be issued within 24 hours of the reservation, and the sitter will keep 100% of their planned earnings.
